CDMA is owned by Qualcomm so everytime someone makes a cdma compliant handset qualcomm gets a portion of the profit. WCDM/UMTS is not owned by Qualcomm so more profits for the handset makers. Profit usually wins out over quality.

W-CDMA uses a CDMA air interface, which is covered by Qualcomm patents, so yeah, they profit from the sale of FOMA and UMTS phones (both standards use W-CDMA) as well as IS-95/IS-2000 (Verizon and Sprint) phones.

In OSX, there's no way to disable the paging file (virtual memory). This is a real problem is if you have an SSD, because half the memory is allocated on the hard drive. That means your SSD will be toast in a few years. It doesn't matter how much stuff you have open (how much memory is allocated). The operating system is always writing memory to the hard drive. Does that seem counter-productive? When you open an app, the whole point is for it to be accessible in real time, right? And you don't want it destroying your SSD slowly over time!?

In Windows 7, you can disable the paging file, and all your memory can be allocated in physical memory. It's nice just to have the option. Apple, however, loves to hide these little details, so they force you too use whatever primary hard drive for virtual memory allocation, even if it's an SSD with a questionable life span, or even an HDD.

And the argument that you don't use more than 4GB of RAM, ever, is ridiculous! Maybe you're not commanding the system to by opening a bunch of apps, but the SYSTEM will be!

Yes. In Windows, if you go over the physical RAM amount and the paging file is turned off, you'll BSOD. But if you have enough RAM, you won't! Unless you run multiple VMs or several games at once, this won't be a problem.

Apple needs to allow users to decided whether they want a paging file, especially with the cost of SSDs. If one dies and it's not on warranty, it's not a good day. And I'm more than ready to blame it on virtual memory allocation.

...that there is no sound. No matter what I do - on my home network or on my friend's - I cannot get sound delivered to the iPhone. The phone's other system sounds work fine, so I know it's not something else. I have already tried deleting and reinstalling too. Additionally, I do sometimes drop sound with my mac's Eyetv and have to quit and restart the application to get it back - does anybody have any idea if that's related somehow?

    I'm so confused :confused::confused:
I've seen this problem also (just once recently, once or twice a long time ago), but it was fixed by restarting the application on the Mac.

It kind erks me that I still have to have a gaming PC to max out current titles. Gosh I wish I Apple would up their GPU game so I could use the Mac for everything. :(

anyone else get an insanely loud noise just before the instal?

Yeah I think I got the same ridiculously loud noise. I followed the instructions that said hold the power button down until the sleep light started flashing and then this huge "BEEP" came out of the laptop and I jumped backward.

I'd like to be able to hide the menu bar in the next version of OSX, like the way you can hide the dock. More real estate for the screen.

It's 22 freaking pixels. So intrusive.

I have 12gb RAM in my iMac and looking at iStat, after 17 days since last reboot I've had 83,053 pageouts!!

It's heartbreaking to know my Mac is having to do all those page outs :( I think I'm going to call OWC and upgrade to 16GB and see if that helps...

    Boohoo. ;)

How many page ins? Close to or over a million? If the # of page outs is < half # of page ins, there is absolutely no reason at all to upgrade memory. It won't make your system any faster or better responsive. If it is more than half, your system could use a memory upgrade and the closer the two numbers are together, the higher your need for memory.

Number of page outs are completely irrelevant and don't mean diddle squat, unless viewed in relation to the number of page ins.

nope, plain vanilla 2nd set of holes. For studs. Because wearing 2 sets of hoops at once looks a little .... not my cup of tea, I can't get away with it, either. :p

got pics of your ear? :)

8 gauge is just a bit bigger than pencil size this is the best pic i have so far:
but you can see my eyebrow and labret too!

I don't happen to think Apple is anything like the Microsoft of the 90's. MOT90's had a legal near monopoly in desktop operating systems due to network effects, and used that to expand into: office suites; browsers; enterprise support; a variety of other things (Xbox, Zune, etc.). Their focus was on expanding sales and controlling markets.

Apple is run by a guy who wants to make beautiful products, who is willing to lock down those products so they work the way he, not you, want.

I tend to agree although it seems sadly inevitable that people in a position of dominance, be it in business or politics, start to fear the loss of power and influence, and do what they can to hold onto it. Jobs has had many successes over the years, but never anything like what Apple is currently experiencing with iOS devices, and you have to wonder what the psychological effects of that are. I like to think it's still all about creating 'insanely great' products, but I don't know.

Anyway, I'm still a great admirer of the man and will look forward to reading this book.

"i, Steve" would have been better.

I thought the same thing. Just that, in a small innocuous typeface, and an arty shot of him partly lit against a simple black background, would suit his minimalistic design sensibilities one would have thought. At least that's how I would design it if it were me.

Which one of these new features (64 bit support, magnetic timeline, audio sample level precision inside the frame, precision editor, etc) do you think would slow my editing process down vs now and why?

I wouldn't argue that those things would slow down your editing process. My point is, that nobody has used this product. To instantly proclaim that it is "better" or "faster" without having used the product seems premature.

I hope it lives up to all the promises as well, but until I use it in a production environment there is no way to know. None of us have even tried it.

On the show I currently run, we would benefit immensely from the 64 bit and the background rendering, but it's an animated show and our audio and video never comes in linked. It's always synced manually and just judging by the demo it's possible that the new timeline structure could actually slow us down and or create new workflow problems.

So like all new editing packages, we'll wait until Apple ships it to us. We'll install it on one system and evaluate it before we start having people switch over. With any new software there are usually tradeoffs and we will evaluate the final product in a work environment before we would commit to purchasing all the licenses we would need.

From the article: "His companys device only comes onto the market shortly before then and would benefit hugely because the new iPod would sport a screen that filled the full side of the device and consequently offer higher resolution video."

Any guess what that device is?

I happen to be in Princeton right now an I can confirm that there are a lot of young people with apple laptops there. When you go to starbucks, you see quite a lot of people with laptops (starbucks has wifi), and 90% of them are Macbook Pros, Macbooks, or 12" Powerbooks. I felt so at home when I pulled out my Macbook. And that one guy with his old dell was so ashamed :p

One reason could be that there's only one computer store in this little town, and this store only sells Macs and iPods.

Having said that I ordered mine Tuesday and it still says a ship date of 26th April, that is 6 weeks. I hope they send it earlier as I would be a little pissed if someone ordered today and got it earlier than the 26th April.

    I mis-counted 5 weeks.

And the order date just changed to 21st April that is still 4 weeks and 2 days from order date. Ironically though because of the weekend it is due to be delivered on the 26th, so 2 days earlier than before....lol

you mean like those who feel religious oppressed need to source how exactly a veil is religious?

It's hard to source an opinion.

But when someone asserts that laws exist, it shouldn't be too much to expect them to source those laws.

To be honest, I do miss the quad. Mine was silent and I loved the fx4500 quadro in it. It did hanbrake upthere with the best of them. That said though, I don't have room for lots of Boxen and the 2.3 dual pm I have ATM ( boxed up) won't be out for a while as I am way to buisy with work and stuff ATM.

But the quad is no comparison to the 2.8 octo I have now. And it plays a heap of games. The gtx285 is also much, much faster than the quadro.
I can't really imagine you selling your Mac pro and grabbing a quad. If you do I would recon you will be getting another Mac pro shortly after that.

    As that's what I did....lol

I started with dual 1.8pm, then dual 2.0 pm then Mac pro (early 2006) sold all three and bought a quad pm. Then picked up a very cheap 2.3pm. And then last Christmas sold the Mac pro and the quad and bought the Mac pro 3,1. I've never looked back as this box hauls. And it's a lot cheaper on power than the quad was.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my quad, but it got kinda sour when blizzard refused to let me play their new releases on my more than capable quad ppc pm.

I am not a real fan of geekbench, as its a synthetic benchmark. All I know is my quad was a very, very nice piece of kit. And immense had any dramas with it. The only reason I updated wasn't because it was slow ( it sure as crap wasn't that) but only cos certain applications were no longer supported in ppc.

    Yeah love the quad g5!

Exactly the government, you don't have to give something up because some school principal told you. Two completely different situations.

You are right, you don't... However, you could be escorted off the property by the police and then suspended. Is that worth it?
