Who is going to pay for news these days?

    Tony

I think people will pay for 'news' when they realize that they're actually paying for reporting. What passes for 'news' for free online is often just crap.

There's a lot of content that the on-demand portion of netflix doesn't include. If Apple can get more new releases I could see it as a complementary service to netflix--but not a replacement. In the end, much of the most popular content will still only be available on disc from netflix.

If this turns out to be true, I doubt Apple's price model could match the value in netflix. I'm sure it will be better integrated and more convenient to use however.

It is scary how stalkerish technology has become... The other night I typed my address into Google Earth and it pulled up a satellite image of my house... google was only 2 houses off.... that is really ****ed up

Huh? Given an address any printed-map of any detail can take someone directly to that address and that is just 'paper and printing-press' technology. Scary how those maps can enable you to find a location!

Wasnt there a quote from the Big Cheese Steve that "it's all included" or simmilar, hinting that ilife, iwork will be included in os releases again?

Ohh, I'd love that, more money to put towards the iPhone.

I think the lack of computer related announcements today was to underscore the name change to Apple Inc. It's a whole new world baby, and computers are only a part of it.

I don't remember any new hardware in November, let alone December. (Please speak up and correct me, what was the most recent Apple hardware both announced and released Nov.1 - Dec. 31)

If this appleinsider note is correct, MacBook Pro could be Nov. 1?

    http://appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2163

Either this thread is very dead, or no one remembers any Nov/Dec Apple hardware.

On your second monitor. Is that program on the right from iStats? If so how do you get that there because I have iStats and I can not figure it out. If its not iStats, what is it?

    Thank you

It's the iStat widget, but with Dashboard put into Dev Mode. Here's the OS X Hint for it: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20050422172929402

This allows you to have the widgets show up on the desktop. The only issue is that the widget hovers all windows. Use this app if you want that issue addressed for you: http://db.csail.mit.edu/madden/WidgetRunner/

im hoping this quietly fixes the unresponsive home button issue.

We have 4 iPhones in the family. Two of the four had this issue and Apple exchanged both without a second thought. Take it back.

    Concerns about cost aside...

Is anyone else looking forward to how people hack this into being a peripheral for interfacing with computers? After seeing the Wiimote multitouch demo (http://www.ted.com/talks/johnny_lee_demos_wii_remote_hacks.html) at TED, I've got my hopes.

I think this will have a profound effect on robotics. There's a sensor that does the same type of ranging like it now, but it's like $9000. It's called the Swiss Ranger (http://www.acroname.com/robotics/parts/c_Sensors.html). For electronics projects, this is pretty damn expensive, especially for small scale research at the university levels and hobbyists. But like the Wii, reverse engineering a mass produced item might bring about some interesting things.

I guess that's how it goes sometimes. Technology becomes "practical" when there's a consumer application and you can apply economies of scale.

I've just got home and install the update, does not look like it's fixed the core duo bug.. oh well no biggy..

I would expect the imac to run cooler than the macbook as the imac's fans can afford to be running at a higher speed and the heats sync is bigger..

Also the Core 2 machines shouldn't have this bug and are meant to run cooler anyway.. so..

back to smcFanControl to get me temp readings..

Cingular officially announced today (http://cingular.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=press_releases&item=1742) its new mobile music service, deciding to partner with Microsoft, Napster, Yahoo! Music, XM Satellite Radio and eMusic for a subscription-based service model.

Many have seen this event as an essential death-sentence to the rumor that Apple would be launching the 'iPhone' as Cingular-only (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060926075521.shtml) initially. However, the possibility still exists that Apple could operate as a "mobile virtual network operator" (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/07/20050708134757.shtml) (MVNO) on Cingular's network.

Early this year it was discovered that Apple was seeking RF engineers with EDGE experience (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/01/20060120030030.shtml) (EDGE is a relatively high-bandwidth mobile network for GSM carriers such as Cingular). Around the same time, Apple acquired a large datacenter in California (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/02/20060227183355.shtml) that was originally designed for MCI WorldCom.

A release date concerning Apple's phone has notoriously been a moving target for rumor sites to pin down. The latest consensus has appeared to pin down early 2007 with an introduction perhaps at MacWorld San Francisco, however some unconfirmed rumblings from MacRumors sources have been indicating that a spring release may also be in the cards.

probably cut into the regular imacs sales too much.

Yes, that's why. The Edu-iMac was good (too good) value compared to the regular iMac. However, when the Merom based iMacs come out (WWDC), and the Edu-iMac is left behind with Yonah, then they will probably go back to the previous policy.

    Roll on WWDC :)

    10.6 is very decent but there are a couple of minor things that would make me very happy;
being able to password protect individual folders
    and
greater freedom in being able to display/group your files and apps as you like (for example being able to group apps by type/frequency of use or being able to list a track under several genres/artists in itunes; which should be possible as the program doesn't have to edit the ID3 tags).

    And MacPaint!

iCal has been a disaster for 4 OS X releases now. It is, without a doubt, Apple's worse application. It's missing functionality, basic functionality, that has been in every calendaring program since 1992.

iCal is a sad example of Apple going to far to the extreme of minimization.

All I really wanted in the last 2 OS updates was a decent iCal. It's the only thing on the Mac that continually hurts my productivity.

I've learned that iCal is just the price of being a Mac guy, and I don't hope for greatness. Heck, I don't even hope for mediocrity. iCal is always going to be slow, inconsistent UI and barely usable.

I'm at peace with that fact now.

I can't say I agree. Mabe it's because I haven't gone and tried other calendering programs, but I use iCal every day and it's a pleasure to use. It syncs events and to-dos with widgets on dashboard, I'm subscribed to some online calenders to keep track of lost and 24, amung other things, and it's all colorful and organized and looks great. Sure, theres definitely potential for upgrades, but I think it's great as is.

As WWDC 2006 approaches, rumors continue to appear about what we could see at the developer's conference.

MacOSXRumors claims (http://www.macosxrumors.com/articles/2006/08/02/exclusive-leopard-to-bring-virtual-desktops-account-wide-file-syncing-and-faster-spotlight/) to have reliable information about Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) which will be demoed at the expo.

Previous rumors from the rumor site claimed collaborative features (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/06/20060609041938.shtml), and virtualization support (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/03/20060324092148.shtml). This time, the site claims that Leopard will incorporate virtual desktops, improved file syncing, and improved spotlight performance.

Meanwhile, an unconfirmed Page 2 report (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060802151736.shtml) claims that the Intel Xeon (Woodcrest) will find its way into Apple's new Xserve and top-of-the-line Mac Pro. Meanwhile, the lower-end Mac Pros will use the recently released Core 2 Duo (Conroe) chips. Other hints include a Merom update to the current line and new Leopard features, including some 3d effects.

WWDC (http://guides.macrumors.com/WWDC) kicks off on August 7th, 2006 with Steve Jobs providing the Keynote address.
